SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington is exploring new technology to prevent drunk driving with the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety.
This innovative system uses infrared light to analyze breath for alcohol presence and can distinguish between the driver and passengers without requiring a mouthpiece.
If the blood alcohol level reaches the programmed limit, the vehicle will not start.
The system was showcased at the Spokane Convention Center, highlighting its potential to enhance road safety.
In 2023, 27% of all deadly crashes involved a drunk driver, resulting in 216 lives lost.
Washington is the fourth state to participate in this national initiative, aiming to merge technology with behavior change to eliminate drunk driving.
