WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Washington State Penitentiary’s East Complex has introduced a new visiting room playground, offering a safe space for incarcerated men to connect with their children.
The playground was funded through the Incarcerated Individuals Betterment Fund and inspired by the Washington Way program, the Department of Corrections (DOC) said in a release.
Staff members gathered to celebrate the playground’s opening, while incarcerated individuals participated in a sage smudging and prayer ceremony.
Plans are already in motion to further transform the space into a family-friendly environment, the DOC added.
