OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new law in Washington that took effect today requires public buildings to provide baby diaper changing stations in restrooms.
The measure passed by the Washington State Legislature mandates that both men’s and women’s restrooms, or a gender-neutral restroom, must include a changing station.
The requirements apply to any new public building as well as existing buildings undergoing restroom renovations costing $15,000 or more.
However, exceptions are made if installation is deemed unfeasible or if it would violate disability access standards.
Public buildings that fail to comply after receiving a warning will face penalties, unless the changing stations are removed due to misuse.
The definition of a “public building” includes any building mandated to have a public restroom, except industrial or commercial buildings that restrict entry to minors.
