For the first time, people can check the risk of measles in their community using only a ZIP code.
Last weekend, an unvaccinated child at Providence Sacred Heart tested positive for measles. Doctors are still working to confirm how many people were exposed at that time.
Measles is an extremely contagious disease that spreads through the air, but doctors say the safety risk is really determined by your vaccination status.
ABC News and researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine, HealthMap and Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, created a map to allow people to find out how high the risk is for their community.
In Kootenai County, the current risk level is “Very High,” with less than 60% of children under 5 being vaccinated against measles.
