SPOKANE, WA – A new pedestrian safety project is coming to an intersection near Mead High School.
The project is in response to a woman being hit and killed by a school bus earlier this year.
20-year-old Eva Allen was in a crosswalk at Hastings Road and Bellwood Drive when she was hit by the bus.
The new project, announced Thursday by Spokane County Commissioners, will upgrade street lighting and install a pedestrian-activated crosswalk flashing beacon.
Commissioners also expressed support for expanding the 20-mph zone in front of the school.
“The tragedy that occurred in January was heartbreaking,” said Commissioner Chris Jordan. “I heard an outpouring of grief from so many in the community. We are taking action to improve pedestrian safety for residents and students at that intersection for years to come.”
The flashing beacon will cost the Spokane County Public Works Department approximately $25,000.
It will be installed as soon as parts arrive.
The Mead School District pledged $5,000 to the project, as did Fairwood Retirement Village and Assisted Living, which is nearby.
Fairwood Farmer’s Market Co-Founder Rob Allen also pledged $1,000 to the project.
