SPOKANE, Wash — A local nonprofit has opened an Afrocentric boutique at Northtown Mall that transforms shopping into community support, offering customers culturally significant fashion while funding maternal health and wellness programs.
The boutique operates as part of the organization’s Spokane Health and Wellness District, which includes two neighboring spaces: Diverse Roots, dedicated to storytelling, and Sacred Wisdom, focused on education. The new space, Common Grounds, is dedicated to economic empowerment and supporting the programs at the Shades of Motherhood.
“What we are doing is raising funds for us to be right here in the Northtown mall, where we can give free group acupuncture massages, breathing sessions, meditation, all of this stuff is free,” said Stephaine Courtney, executive director of Shades of Motherhood Network.
This month’s collection at Common Grounds highlights styles from the 1970s through the 2000s, offering customers unique fashions that blend heritage with individual expression. The boutique has clothing, accessories, cultural items, art, books, and purposeful gifts.
The store is open every Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the next three months.
