National Winnie the Pooh Day is celebrated today in honor of A.A. Milne’s birthday. Milne, born in 1882, is the British author best known for his cherished children’s stories featuring Winnie the Pooh.
Winnie the Pooh, affectionately known as Pooh Bear, was inspired by a real black bear named Winnie who lived at the London Zoo during World War I. Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, frequently visited the bear and named his own teddy bear after her.
Milne’s stories have been translated into more than 50 languages and are considered classics today.
