LEWISTON, Idaho – A mountain lion was sighted on the Lewis-Clark College campus late Sunday, February 1. Surveillance footage captured the young lion near the ticket booth by the baseball field. Fish and Game, campus security staff and Lewiston Police officers searched the area but did not locate the mountain lion.
Jana Ashling, Regional Wildlife Manager, emphasized that while such sightings in urban areas are rare, they are not unheard of. “While sightings of mountain lions in urban areas are rare, it’s not unheard of,” Ashling said.
Fish and Game stressed the importance of public safety, urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant to reduce the risk of unexpected encounters with wildlife. They offered several personal safety tips, including not running if encountering a mountain lion, making oneself appear large and yelling loudly.
For pet safety, residents are advised to keep pets on a leash and observe their behavior, as they may sense a lion before humans do. Pet owners should also avoid leaving pet food outside and accompany pets outdoors whenever possible.
Homeowners can reduce the likelihood of a mountain lion approaching their home by securing garbage, installing motion-sensor lights and covering window wells.
Residents are encouraged to report any mountain lion sightings or encounters to the Fish and Game, Clearwater Regional Office at (208) 799-5010. Timely reports help monitor lion behavior and assess potential risks to public safety.
