MOSCOW, Idaho – As the July 4th holiday approaches, the Moscow Fire Department is emphasizing fireworks safety and legal guidelines to ensure a safe celebration.

In Idaho, Non-Aerial Common Fireworks can be sold and used from June 23 to July 5. These include ground spinners, fountains, sparklers, and smoke devices, designed to stay on or near the ground. They are known as “safe and sane” fireworks.

Key safety tips include using fireworks outdoors, having water nearby and ensuring only persons over age 12 handle sparklers. The department warns, “Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a ‘designated shooter.’”

Fireworks are a significant cause of fires, averaging 19,700 annually, leading to three deaths, 8,500 injuries and $43 million in property damage, the Moscow Fire Department said in a release.

Illegal fireworks, such as firecrackers and bottle rockets, are banned in Moscow and can result in severe penalties.

Residents are urged to be cautious when purchasing fireworks outside the city, as illegal options may be available nearby. Discharging illegal fireworks or using legal ones outside permitted dates can lead to a misdemeanor charge.
