Montana man missing, presumed drowned in Lochsa River near Wilderness Gateway Campground

IDAHO COUNTY, Idaho – A 68-year-old Montana man was reported missing and is presumed to have drowned in the Lochsa River near the Wilderness Gateway Campground on Wednesday.

According to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a 911 call around 2:50 p.m. The man was last seen at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Idaho County deputies responded promptly, searching the area on foot and deploying a drone. The Idaho County Sheriff’s Posse assisted with a K-9 unit, and multiple rafters—including staff from Three Rivers Rafting—also joined the search effort.

Search operations continued both on the ground and in the water, with aerial support from the drone. The Nez Perce County Dive Team planned to assess conditions to determine whether a dive would be possible.

As of now, the man has not been found.
