LAPWAI, Idaho – Nez Perce Tribal Police and the Idaho Animal Rescue Network (IARN) rescued 22 small dogs from a mobile home on Grouse Road. The rescue followed concerns about the living conditions observed during a recent grass fire evacuation.
Authorities found the mobile home without running water, powered only by an extension cord. During a follow-up visit, some dogs were voluntarily surrendered, but signs of more dogs and a strong odor prompted further investigation.
With a search warrant, officials discovered 22 chihuahua and chihuahua-mix dogs living in hazardous conditions.
“This is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly situations can spiral out of control, especially with unaltered animals in rural areas,” said Jenna Redheart, director of Idaho Animal Rescue Network. “We’re incredibly thankful for the fast and compassionate response from our partner organizations. When we come together like this, it’s the animals who win. Collaboration is what makes large-scale rescue efforts like this possible.”
The IARN, alongside Helping Hands Rescue, Animal Rescue Foundation and Lewis Clark Animal Shelter, removed the dogs and provided support. Each dog is in the process of receiving necessary veterinary care through local providers.
