UPDATE: December 31 at 1:11 p.m.

A propane space heater inside of a shed was the most likely cause of the mobile home fire that displaced nearly dozen people, according to an update from the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

SVFD said that the shed, which was being used as a living space, caught fire and then ultimately spread to three mobile homes.

Eight engines, two ladder trucks and three battalion chiefs responded to the fire alongside two ambulances, two investigators and several police units.

Only one home was occupied when the fire broke out, SVFD said. All residents escaped safely and two animals were successfully rescued.

SVFD confirmed that 10 people were displaced due to the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the affected families.

“Spokane Valley fire would like to remind residents during the cold winter months to keep space heaters at least three feet away from all flammable objects,” the agency said in a press release.
