MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The community gathered today to honor the two children who died in the recent shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis. Mourners paid their respects at a growing memorial.

The parents of one of the victims, Fletcher Merkel, spoke at an emotional press conference. Fletcher’s father, Jessie Merkel, shared a heartfelt message.

“Please remember Fletcher for the person he was and not the act that ended his life. Give your kids an extra hug and kiss today. We love you, Fletcher. You’ll always be with us,” he said.

In a search for answers, the FBI raided a home potentially linked to the shooting. They were searching for “Mary Grace Westman,” believed to be the shooter’s mother.

Investigators have examined writings and videos left by the shooter, which revealed violent thoughts. Joseph Thompson, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, provided insight into the mindset of the shooter.

“But reading them one thing is clear. It’s gonna be hard to hear. But it’s important to the question of why this happened. More than anything the shooter wanted to kill children. Defenseless children,” Thompson said.

Authorities also noted the shooter’s desire for notoriety, particularly related to the shooting. They urged the public to refrain from mentioning the shooter’s name.
