MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – Owen Pitts, a teen from Medical Lake, “died this morning after a hard fought battle with cancer,” the Medical Lake boys basketball team announced in a social media post.
Owen captured the heart of the Medical Lake community last December when he achieved lifelong dreams of playing in a varsity basketball game and graduating from high school.
He was first diagnosed with cancer as a child and went into remission, however, the cancer came back and was considered terminal.
“Owen inspired our entire community with his spirit and fight,” Coach Brett Ward wrote. “For us as a team, Owen has been part of everything we have done and will continue to be a part of everything we do moving forward.”
“I will never forget the triumphant moment of him scoring his basket and receiving his diploma,” Ward said. “Thoughts and prayers for the entire Pitts family.”
