HAYDEN, Idaho – A case of measles has been reported in Kootenai County, the Panhandle Health District (PHD) confirmed in a press release.
An unvaccinated child has been infected with measles, according to PHD.
This is the first case of measles in an Idaho resident since 2023, and the first in the northern Panhandle since 1991.
“Measles is a highly contagious virus and spreads easily through the air when an infected person breaths, coughs or sneezes,” PHD said in a press release.
“The measles vaccine is highly effective, and for most people, two childhood doses of vaccine is all they will ever need to protect themselves against measles for their lifetime.”
Among all measles cases in 2025, 13% led to hospitalization. PHD said that the majority of hospitalizations were of young children.
