Mayor Lisa Brown aims to make childcare more affordable in Spokane with new ordinance

SPOKANE, Wash. – Mayor Lisa Brown is introducing an ordinance to make it easier for people to open childcare facilities in Spokane. This initiative comes as childcare costs in Washington state range from $15,000 to $20,000 annually.

The proposed ordinance would streamline the process for establishing daycare and childcare facilities throughout the city. This measure targets the removal of the costly conditional use permit currently required to open childcare centers in some residential neighborhoods. If passed, the ordinance would allow childcare centers in all residential areas of Spokane.

Washington ranks sixth for the highest childcare costs, according to Tootris News and Education. Luc Jasmin III, co-founder of Glow Early Learning Center, addressed the demand for more childcare options.

“The need is there,” he said. “I can’t tell you the amount of calls we get from moms that just want to work to provide for their family, but they don’t have an option that’s close to their work. They don’t have an option that’s close to where they live.”

Jasmin noted that the current shortage of childcare facilities forces some parents to use multiple daycares. He believes the ordinance would help alleviate this issue.

City Council members Zack Zappone and Paul Dillon are in support of the ordinance. Council member Michael Cathcart also expressed support. However, Jonathon Bingle’s position is unknown as he has not yet responded.
