Man killed in police shooting outside Tonasket identified

40-year-old Samuel Mittler was identified as the man shot by police northeast of Tonasket on December 19, according to a press release from The North Central Washington Special Investigations Unit (NCWSIU).

Police said they were executing a nationwide arrest warrant when Mittler “contacted members of the Marshals Service” while armed with a shotgun.

TONASKET, Wash. – A man died on December 19 in a police shooting around 17 miles northeast of Tonasket, according to a joint press release from the North Central Washington Special Investigation Unit (NCWSIU).

According to the release, the U.S. Marshals Service Special Operations Group and Washington State Patrol SWAT Team were “executing a nationwide arrest warrant” for a man wanted on two counts of second-degree assault and one count of intimidating a public servant.

The NCWSIU said that the man was armed with a shotgun while law enforcement attempted to arrest him.

“An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was declared deceased at the scene,” according to the press release.

An investigation is ongoing.
