Madison Elementary teachers share tips for kindergarten readiness

SPOKANE, Wash. – Teachers at Madison Elementary School are offering valuable insights for parents as they prepare their children for the transition to kindergarten.

One key challenge for young students is adjusting to a full school day. Teachers advise parents to be patient, noting that children might struggle with the new schedule initially. It’s common for kids to feel exhausted during the first few weeks as they adapt.

Sharing can also be difficult for children. It’s not just about sharing space, but also materials and toys. Learning to communicate effectively with new peers and adults is an important part of the process.

Teachers at Madison Elementary suggest that parents practice new routines early. They emphasize the importance of teaching children how to communicate their needs, as this skill can be beneficial in the weeks to come.

In addition to these insights, educators offer four practical tips for parents to help their children prepare for kindergarten. First, establishing a morning and bedtime routine before school starts can ease the transition. Practicing getting up, getting ready, and leaving on time can help set expectations.

Second, encouraging independence in tasks like zipping a sweatshirt, putting away a backpack, and cleaning up toys can boost a child’s confidence.

Third, engaging in regular conversations with children helps them practice oral language and develop communication skills.

Finally, teaching children how to appropriately ask for help and to wait patiently can be beneficial for both the child and their teacher.

These tips aim to prepare children for the challenges of kindergarten, setting them on a path to success.
