SPOKANE, Wash. – As SNAP benefits near expiration, an Armenian restaurant based in Spokane called Skewers said it would give away meals of prepackaged, microwavable chicken and rice meals to anyone who needs one.

Skewers said it would start giving away meals on Saturday, November .

“As SNAP benefits come to an end, many families in our community will be facing greater food insecurity. At Skewers, we want to do our small part to help,” Skewers wrote in their Facebook announcement.

The restaurant said there would be no questions asked for anyone who came to pick up a free meal. It even said people could pick up meals for their family or for someone else they know is in need.

Skewers said people can also call ahead to ensure there are still meals available before they come to pick one up.

“This isn’t about publicity — it’s about people. It isn’t about attention it’s about intention,” Skewers wrote in its post.

“We’re sharing this to make sure our community knows there’s help available, and to remind each of us that kindness still matters. Even small acts of care can bring hope to someone’s day. In a time when division feels louder than unity, let’s choose compassion. Let’s be the kind of community that stands strong — together,” Skewers continued.

The restaurant encouraged readers to be aware of resources in their community and to support local foodbanks.

In the comments section of their post, Skewers mentioned that people reached out to them to offer donations.

“Thank you for wanting to be part of this. For now, we are fine with taking on this duty. If we discover an enormous demand, we may ask for help to double or triple the number of meals we plan to serve. However, for now, I encourage anyone considering donating to us, to instead donate to a local food bank,” the restaurant wrote in reply.

Skewers has a location at 1009 West 1st Avenue as well as a food truck. The restaurant also offers catering services.

Skewers’ website said it serves “Fresh, Healthy, and Authentic Middle Eastern Cuisine.”
