SPOKANE, Wash. — Prom season is starting, and some parents might be worried about spending big money on formal wear. Local nonprofit Sew She Can, wants to reach out a helping hand.
They’ve partnered with Alterations on South Hill for Project Prom Closet. The program gives free prom dresses, suits, shoes and accessories to local high schoolers for free.
“I would just look at the prices stacking up during prom season. It would get as expensive as a bride’s wedding dress. And I’m like, as a high schooler…. As a parent…that’s a lot,” said Cricket Green, Sew She Can co-founder.
People can donate gently used formal wear at Alterations on South Hill. They accept donations until Tuesday, March 31st. For brand new attire that doesn’t require washing beforehand, they will accept donations up until Friday, April 3rd.
The free shopping event happens Saturday, April 4 at NorthTown Mall from noon to 6 p.m. Any high schooler with a valid student ID can shop for free.
Used dresses will be cleaned and repaired.
“Everything’s going to be pristine,” Green said.
Students can try on any formal wear and request alterations on April 4. Sew She Can tailors will handle any optional alterations at discounted rates. Those profits will return back to the tailors who are a part of the nonprofit.
