LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. – Speed cameras near Liberty Lake are no longer in place following the conclusion of a pilot program by the Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT).
The program, which began in April, was designed to catch speeders in the area. Over the past two and a half months, the DOT reported sending out 16,000 courtesy notices to Washington drivers. These notices were issued between the Liberty Lake location and another site in Skagit County.
“Well I think one of the notes that came out 277 vehicles that were going 100 plus miles an hour with both locations which is quite alarming when you think about what the speed limits are in those locations,” Kyle Miller from the Washington State Department of Transportation stated.
With the program concluded, the future of speed cameras in the area is uncertain. The DOT plans to have a full report available by September for legislative consideration.
While the cameras have been removed, drivers are still encouraged to maintain safe speeds.
