SPOKANE, Wash. – The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) unveiled a new permanent addition to its sculpture collection on Wednesday morning, calling the donation a “landmark gift for Spokane” in a press release.

The Deborah Butterfield piece, named “Untitled” and depicting a horse, was originally constructed from driftwood and then cast in bronze. Bronze and patina are listed as the piece’s materials on its placard at the museum.

“Long celebrated for conveying stillness and quiet dignity through the figure of the horse, Butterfield is recognized as one of the most influential sculptors of her generation,” the museum wrote in a press release.

The piece was donated by the Jim Knox family of Spokane, who acquired it in the 1990s. The MAC said it remained in their residence up until its donation.

“We are thrilled to have received such a generous gift,” MAC Executive Director Wesley Jessup said.

Butterfield lives and works in Hawaii and Montana. She was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center in 2022.
