Kootenai County man sentenced for child sexual abuse

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho – A man was sentenced for sexually abusing a minor between 2012 and 2015.

John Summerlin, 55, formerly of Kootenai County, was convicted of sexually abusing a child under the age of 16. The abuse occurred multiple times, involving inappropriate touching of the victim.

On May 7, Senior District Judge Lansing Haynes handed down Summerlin’s sentence. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Molly Nivison recommended a 25-year sentence with parole eligibility after 15 years. However, Judge Haynes sentenced Summerlin to 10 years in prison, with parole eligibility after five years.

Sexual abuse of a child under 16 is a felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison in Idaho.
