KENNEWICK, Wash. – A local church in Kennewick faced an unexpected challenge when its food pantry became the target of vandalism.

The First Christian Church Food Pantry, known for its motto “Take what you need, leave what you can,” was the scene of destruction. Members of the church discovered the pantry’s doors open, with cans of food smashed and staples like beans and rice scattered everywhere.

The situation escalated when the suspects set the debris on fire on a bench outside the church. Police are currently investigating the incident as a reckless burning case.

Pastor Matthew Keith shared his experience, saying, “Kennewick police woke me up and said, you need to meet us down here. We’ve had a problem.”

The community quickly responded to the incident, with a Facebook post about the vandalism receiving nearly 200 comments. Many residents reached out to offer help. “I’ve gotten absolutely none of the Monday stuff done because there has been a constant stream since the officer put this on Facebook of folks calling, saying, how can we help? What do you need?” said Keith.

Keith emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “I’ve told kids for years in similar circumstances, when you make a mess, you need to clean it up. And I’m hoping that we get the chance for some parents to step in, and kids in the neighborhood who are engaging in this kind of mischief can clean up the damage of what they’ve done.”

The investigation remains open as Kennewick police continue to search for the suspects. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.
