SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane’s Nuestras Raices Community Center (NRCC) is inviting the public to participate in creating their own ofrendas, or offerings, to honor loved ones who have passed away.

This event is part of the annual Dia de los Muertos celebrations, aiming to unite people from different backgrounds, including those unfamiliar with the traditions.

There will be activities for both kids and adults.

Wednesday night, from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., kids can learn to build an ofrenda at the community center located at 1214 E Sprague Ave. Adults will have the same opportunity from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at No-Li Brewhouse.

Jennifer Vigil, NRCC board president, emphasized the importance of community and memory during these celebrations.

“If you have ever carried love in your heart for somebody who is no longer with us, then just bring that with you. It’s a wonderful thing, to celebrate those memories. My dad used to say, if we’re not together, we’re scattering. So it’s really important for community to come together. Otherwise, it’s just the normal nature of the universe that we scatter so,” she said.

Organizers remind participants that no prior knowledge of the celebration is required. All you need to bring is a picture of your loved one or even your pet to join in.

Additionally, unique No-Li glasses made specifically for the celebration will be available while supplies last. No purchase is necessary to receive a glass.

On November 1, there will be another celebration at 4:00 p.m. for ages 21 and older to showcase music and culture.
