BONNER COUNTY, Idaho – Sheriff Daryl Wheeler announced the approval and funding of a Jail and Justice System Assessment (JJSA) for the county. The initiative aims to evaluate the need for expanding or remodeling the aging jail and establishing a criminal justice center nearby.

“I wanted expert advice from professionals, who could make an unbiased assessment of our current jail and justice system,” Wheeler stated.

According to Sheriff Wheeler, the assessment, led by Kathryn Bryan of Detention Operations, LLC, and Patrick Jablonski, Senior Statistician of Harpeth Research, is set to begin on June 10.

It will be a two-and-a-half-day process involving inspections and interviews with local law enforcement, court personnel and public safety partners.

Sheriff Wheeler announced that the findings will be presented during a Town Hall meeting at Kootenai Community Church on June 12 at 9 a.m.

“A final report on findings will be presented, and questions from the audience will be fielded,” Wheeler said. “I want input from Bonner County residents and honest conversations.”
