SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 7,000 pounds of pumpkins grown by incarcerated individuals at Airway Heights Corrections Center were donated to Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane.

According to the Washington State Department of Corrections, more than 700 pumpkins were cultivated by inmates as part of the facility’s agricultural program and delivered to the hospital for patients and their families.

DOC staff helped deliver the pumpkins and watched as children and families selected their favorites.

DOC said that the program teaches agricultural and job skills while giving participants an opportunity to contribute positively to their community as part of the state’s rehabilitation efforts.
