Idaho taps emergency funds to aid ICE in transporting criminals

BOISE, Idaho – Governor Brad Little, along with the Board of Examiners, approved up to $300,000 from the Governor’s emergency fund to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in transporting “dangerous illegal alien criminals” out of Idaho jails.

The move supports the Idaho State Police’s agreement with ICE under the 287(g) program. This program allows state and local law enforcement officers to perform specified immigration officer functions under ICE’s oversight.

Governor Little emphasized the importance of this initiative in a letter to ISP Colonel Bill Gardiner, stating, “An untold number of illegal immigrants poured into our country across an unchecked border for years under the Biden Administration, but with President Trump back in the White House we are seeing a solution to this public safety emergency.”

Colonel Gardiner estimated the transportation cost at up to $300,000 for 100 transports, each carrying multiple dangerous illegal alien criminals. Idaho will use the Jail Enforcement Model to process and transport the most violent criminals who have completed their sentences.

The emergency fund has previously supported ISP missions, including border state operations and the investigation of Bryan Kohberger, accused of killing four University of Idaho students.
