COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – Idaho State Police drug-detection dogs are now certified to detect fentanyl, according to the Idaho State Police.

Idaho State Police announced its K-9’s certification in a press release on December 9. The new odor is the fifth K-9s are trained to detect, including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and marijuana, according to the Idaho State Police.

“These dogs are incredibly smart and can typically learn a new scent in less than a week,” ISP K-9 Handler Sgt. Cottrell said. “Being certified on this new odor only strengthens our efforts in the fight against illegal drugs.”

The Idaho State Police deploys nine K-9s, stationed across Idaho and assisting troopers and partner agencies. Idaho State Police handlers carry Narcan in their vehicles at all times, according to the press release.
