Idaho State Police clarify new passing law for drivers

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Idaho State Police (ISP) have addressed confusion surrounding a new passing law that came into effect on July 1. The law permits drivers to exceed the speed limit by up to 15 miles per hour when overtaking other vehicles on designated passing lanes.

Previously, state law only allowed passing on two-lane roads. However, the new regulation specifies that drivers can legally pass at 15 miles over the speed limit on a two-lane road with clearly marked passing lanes, provided the vehicle being passed is traveling under the speed limit.

ISP emphasized that the law does not apply in certain conditions. These include areas where the speed limit is below 55 miles per hour, when towing, passing on the right or when on the interstate.

The purpose of the law is to enhance safety for drivers in areas with limited passing zones, according to ISP.
