COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Idaho State Patrol is offering winter driving classes across the state, aimed at helping residents and newcomers prepare for challenging winter conditions. These classes are designed to provide valuable insights into safe driving during the winter months.
The classes are open to everyone, regardless of where they live. ISP recommends them for new drivers, individuals who have recently moved to the area or anyone who feels they could use a refresher on winter driving skills.
Each class is a one-time session lasting between one hour and an hour and a half. The course includes discussions on previous crashes, their causes and how they could have been prevented. While there will not be any actual driving during the class, a Q&A session will allow participants to refresh their memory.
Sergeant Troy Tulleners with ISP emphasized the value of the classes. “We’ve seen all sorts of, people from all different backgrounds, whether they’re new drivers, old drivers, experienced drivers, or just from out of the area. So, it’s it’s a good refresher for a lot of people if you don’t drive much in winter,” said Tulleners.
The Idaho State Police also stress the importance of knowing your car’s capabilities, such as anti-lock braking systems, drive type and traction control. Ensuring your car is in the right condition for winter, with proper tires and fluid levels, is crucial.
One of the biggest takeaways from the course is the emphasis on giving yourself extra time. The Idaho State Police advise waking up and leaving earlier, allowing more follow distance and avoiding being in a rush during bad weather.
