BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is facing significant financial cuts after the federal government canceled $49 million in grants.
The majority of these cuts impact vaccines for children, totaling more than $29 million.
The Community Mental Health Services Block Grant is also affected, with cuts exceeding $14 million. Additionally, nearly $7 million awarded through the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant has been cut.
In an executive order signed on February 18, President Trump directed the heads of executive departments and agencies to publicize all programs experiencing cuts.
“The United States government spends too much money on programs, contracts and grants that do not promote the interests of the American people,” President Trump said.
These cuts are expected to have a significant impact on public health resources in Idaho.
