BOISE, Idaho – Idaho students in sixth through twelfth grade classrooms will have the chance to name a snowplow in the Idaho Transportation Department’s second annual “Name a Snowplow” contest.

The contest starts on October 1 and ends on October 31, with the winning name’s announcement scheduled for the end of the year, according to the contest rules.

One submission is allowed per classroom for Idaho schools. Employees from each of the Idaho Transportation Department’s six districts will vote for their favorites and two will be selected for each district, meaning twelve names will be picked in total.

“Our snowplow drivers are thrilled to see students getting involved in this fun, educational opportunity that also highlights the importance of winter driving safety,” said Scott Stokes, Director of ITD.

Winning names from last year’s “Name a Snowplow” contest include “The Berminator,” “Darth Blader,” “Plowasaurus Rex,” “Clearapathra,” and more.

Classrooms that submit winning names will get a visit from the snowplow that receives the name and its driver for a winter safety presentation.

The winning name will be added directly to the snowplow for all to see.

The Idaho Transportation Department said that the contest is designed to help teachers introduce winter driving safety messages to students, some of whom are soon-to-be new drivers.

“Adding distinctive names to plows also encourages all motorists to notice and be patient around these essential winter vehicles,” added the department in their release about the contest.

The contest received support from the Department of Education.
