Idaho Attorney General opposes marijuana reclassification order

IDAHO – Community leaders across the country, including Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador, have voiced opposition to President Trump’s recent executive order. The order reclassifies marijuana from a Schedule One drug to a Schedule Three drug.

The reclassification allows for more research into marijuana’s medical benefits and potential dangers. However, it does not legalize marijuana at the federal level.

The order directs the U.S. Attorney General to begin loosening regulations. Despite this, there is no timeline for when these changes might occur.

A statement highlighted the risks associated with drug abuse, comparing it to prescription painkillers. “Just as the prescription painkillers may have legitimate uses, but can also do irreversible damage,” the statement said.

The order reclassifies marijuana alongside drugs like ketamine, codeine and Tylenol with codeine, recognizing it as a less addictive substance.

Labrador expressed his disagreement with the decision, stating, “It’s my belief that the science surrounding marijuana properly establishes it as a Schedule One drug,” he said.

He also mentioned that he has communicated his concerns to the administration and is committed to working together to implement the change while ensuring community safety.
