I-90 drivers in Washington face speed crackdowns next week

OLYMPIA, WA – Law enforcement agencies in Washington plan to ramp up speed enforcement on Interstate 90 as part of a nationwide initiative along the longest interstate highway in the country.

From July 20 through July 27, drivers on I-90 will notice an increased police presence statewide, the Washington State Patrol said in a release.

“Our goal is simple: to save lives. Excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal crashes, and with agencies across the country joining forces, we’re sending a clear message—slow down, drive responsibly, and help make I-90 safer for everyone,” said Chief John Batiste of the Washington State Patrol.

WTSC reports that speeding contributed to 34% of all traffic fatalities in Washington in 2024. Campaigns like this have been shown to reduce speeding-related crashes, WTSC said.

“By collaborating across state lines, we send a strong, unified message: safety has no borders,” said WTSC Director, Shelly Baldwin. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead, give themselves extra travel time, and make safe driving their top priority.”
