Hoopfest weekend to see increased patrols on I-90

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), in collaboration with the Washington State Patrol (WSP), announced a plan for increased police patrols along Interstate 90 during Hoopfest weekend.

The increased patrols will remain in place from June 27-29, monitoring stretches of the interstate from King to Spokane counties.

According to the WTSC, multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the area will be conducting focused patrols that will target impaired drivers and excessive speed, which are reportedly the two leading causes of deadly crashes on Washington roads.

“Hoopfest is a time for families, friends, and competition, but safety must remain our top priority,” WSP Chief John Batiste stated. “Our officers will be out in full force this weekend to ensure that everyone gets to and from the event safely. So please, drive sober and stay alert.”

There were reportedly 33 impaired drivers removed from the roads in the Spokane area during last year’s Hoopfest weekend.

“As we head into one of the busiest weekends of the summer with Hoopfest, our priority is keeping drivers and families safe on the road,” Jana Rackham, Target Zero Manager in Adams, Ferry, Grant and Lincoln counties, said.
