CHELAN, WA — Holden Village will remain closed to guests through at least the summer of 2026 as flood repairs to Forest Service Road (FSR) 8301 continue, according to the village’s latest update.
The US Forest Service (USFS) is leading the repair process, which is dependent on several factors, including weather conditions and potential fire seasons.
The reopening timeline will become clearer after spring snowmelt allows surveyors and engineers to assess the damage. The assessment will help determine the extent of repairs needed, although unexpected delays could extend the work into 2027 or beyond, Holden Village said.
In the meantime, Holden Village is implementing a “Safe Return to Village” plan. On January 1, 2026, five staff members returned via helicopter to establish a long-term winter caretaker team led by Operations Manager Steve Johnson. This team will focus on restarting Holden’s systems and infrastructure.
Despite the closure, Holden Village continues to work with its board, staff, volunteers and partners to maintain its mission and values. The community is preparing new opportunities for connection and renewal, even as the village itself is quieter than usual.
The year-round Lutheran Christian center near the mouth of Lake Chelan in the North Cascade mountains was devastated by flooding and landslides December 10-11, 2025, prompting the evacuation of about 50 people.
The village can be reached by only boat or ferry from Lake Chelan or hiking through the mountains.
