SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – The “Indomitable Spirit” statue at the University Trailhead in Spokane Valley has been sheared off following a hit-and-run incident, the city announced.

According to Jill Smith, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane Valley, a vehicle struck the statue and the driver fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.

The damaged statue has since been removed. The Spokane Valley Police Department is currently investigating the matter.

The “Indomitable Spirit” statue was unveiled as part of a public art celebration on October 28, 2024, in honor of National Arts Month.

The sculpture, which serves as a tribute to man’s strength of spirit, carried the message: “From the ashes of conflict come the everlasting hope for peace.”

Created by artist Jerry McKellar, the statue received several accolades, including the “Director’s Award” for Sculpture Walk in Sioux Falls, SD, in 2012 and the “Bronze Award” at the Art Sculpture in Mankato, MN, in 2014.
