U.S. Highway 2 near Skykomish is expected to reopen in both directions by Sunday, January 4 according to a new update from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and state officials.

This will reopen the highway 24/7 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass (mileposts 50 to 64), with a caveat that the road directly at Stevens Pass will close nightly at 6:00 p.m.

Highway 2 between Stevens Pass Resort and Mill Creek Road (mileposts 64 to 71) is open between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to daylight pilot car operations only.

“A pilot car guides alternating one-way traffic in each direction,” WSDOT said. “THIS IS AN ACTIVE WORK ZONE. Do not pass the pilot car NOR the line following the pilot car.”

Highway 2 is open from Mill Creek Road to Coles Corner (mileposts 71 to 85) between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Between Coles Corner and Leavenworth, the highway remains fully closed in both directions. A detour is available using Chumstick Highway to Beaver Valley Road.

“Except for the Christmas Day holiday, crews have worked around the clock clearing debris and doing roadway and streambed repairs,” WSDOT said. “The progress allowed inspections to take place which determined the road and bridges between Skykomish and Stevens Pass can handle limited travel.”
