LENORE, Idaho — A hidden hypodermic needle was found under a handrail in a restroom stall at the Lenore Rest Area on Friday, January 23, creating a risk of accidental injury and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
The Idaho State Transportation Department shared on Facebook that discarded needles and drug paraphernalia are more frequently appearing across the state, including at rest areas. Rest area caretakers are now paying closer attention to concealed spots to avoid similar issues.
Authorities are urging everyone to stay vigilant when using rest areas. It’s important to be cautious about where you place your hands, especially around handrails and trash receptacles.
In their statement, the department advised that if you come across a needle or any suspected paraphernalia, don’t touch it unless you have the right safety equipment. They noted that sharps containers are available in rest area supply closets, and Idaho State Police should be notified if you’re uncomfortable handling the item.
Officials are stepping up their efforts through increased awareness and considering additional safety training for employees to deal with bloodborne pathogens.
