ADA COUNTY, Idaho – A significant development unfolded Thursday in Ada County as Judge Steven Hippler lifted a non-dissemination order, commonly known as a “gag order,” in the legal proceedings of Bryan Kohberger.
Kohberger pleaded guilty to the stabbing deaths of Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Kaylee Goncalves. This plea deal was announced just over a month before the trial was set to begin.
“At this point, I do not believe the purpose of the non-dissemination order… outweighs those rights I should say,” Judge Hippler explained.
Judge Hippler initially imposed the order to preserve the integrity of the case. However, he decided it was no longer necessary to maintain it.
For transparency, it is important to note that Cowles Publishing, the parent company of NonStop Local, was among several news organizations that petitioned the court to lift the gag order. The process to unseal documents related to the case will commence after sentencing and appeals.
Bryan Kohberger now faces life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 23. NonStop Local will be closely covering the sentencing proceedings.
