Health advisory issued for upper Hayden Lake due to harmful algal bloom

HAYDEN, Idaho — A public health advisory has been issued for the upper end of Hayden Lake, near Sportsman’s Park, after recent testing confirmed the presence of a harmful algal bloom.

Cyanobacteria, which can produce dangerous toxins, were detected in the area. The public is urged to avoid contact with discolored or murky water, which may pose health risks to people and pets.

Boiling or filtering lake water will not remove toxins. Officials also advise washing with fresh water after any contact and removing fat, skin, and organs from fish before cooking.

Symptoms of exposure can include rashes, vomiting, coughing, and more severe effects from ingestion.

The advisory area may shift due to wind and water currents. For updates and safety tips, visit deq.idaho.gov.
