Haight Ashbury’s legacy of counterculture and community

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- Haight Ashbury, known as the epicenter of the hippie movement and counterculture, gained fame during the 1967 “Summer of Love.” Thousands of young Americans gathered there to protest the Vietnam War and materialism.

A local resident shared their perspective on the unique community.

“It’s a community here. I feel like everyone can express themselves outwardly. It’s really cool. We found some cool people that are very knowledgeable about history,” the resident said.

They also mentioned visiting the Counterculture Museum and discovering an intriguing book.

“I got a book from the Counterculture Museum. It’s a really cool place,” the resident said. “The book is ‘Stoned Beyond Belief’ by Action Bronson. Anyone who likes ‘The Alchemist,’ you know what’s up.”

Haight Ashbury continues to be a place where people can express themselves and explore the area’s rich history.
