WASHINGTON – A grass fire broke out on Highway 12 near MP 413, close to the top of Alpowa Pass, causing traffic diversions.
Traffic was redirected onto Ledgerwood Road westbound and Kirby Mayview Road eastbound due to the incident. Smoke significantly impaired visibility, prompting officials to urge drivers to avoid the area.
Fire Chief Cleveland reported that as of 5:10 p.m., the fire was contained. However, efforts to fully control the blaze continued, and authorities asked the public to stay clear of the area.
Washington DOT, Columbia County Fire, and Washington State Patrol were on the scene assisting with the situation. Deputies began working to resume normal traffic flow on the highway as soon as it was safe.
