GRANT COUNTY, Wash. – The Grant County Health District (GCHD) has wrapped up its response to an avian influenza outbreak at a local poultry farm. The outbreak, confirmed in October 2025 by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), did not result in any human infections.
The GCHD, together with the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH), acted swiftly to protect those potentially exposed. Their efforts included assessing potential exposures, testing individuals with symptoms, providing antiviral medication, and training workers in the use of personal protective equipment.
Theresa Adkinson, GCHD Administrator, expressed gratitude towards the various agencies involved. “Thanks to the quick action taken by each agency, our coordinated response was effective, timely, and well-organized,” she said.
Despite the low risk to humans, GCHD advises precautions for those interacting with infected birds or animals. Bird flu, caused by influenza viruses in wild aquatic birds, can occasionally infect humans, particularly those with close contact with affected animals or environments.
