BOISE, Idaho – Idaho Governor Brad Little has ordered U.S. and Idaho flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of firefighters killed in an ambush near Coeur d’Alene.

Two firefighters were struck by gunfire and later died from their injuries after a ‘total ambush’ near Canfield Mountain on Sunday.

One of the firefighters who died in the attack is from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and the other from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.

A third firefighter was injured, recently underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

Flags will remain at half-staff until the day after the firefighters’ memorial service, in line with Idaho law.

“The entire State of Idaho grieves the profound loss of the firefighters killed in the shocking ambush in North Idaho,” said Gov. Little. “All our public safety officers, especially our firefighters, bravely confront danger on a daily basis but we have never seen a heinous act of violence like this on our firefighters before.”

The governor urged the community to join him and his wife in praying for the victims and their families. The directive applies to the state Capitol and other state and local government buildings starting Monday, June 30.
