SEATTLE, Wash. – Governor Bob Ferguson expressed his concerns about recent developments in Seattle during a press conference. He addressed the peaceful nature of recent protests but warned about the consequences of violence. “These are challenging situations,” he said. “Folks have the right to protest, but when things turn violent, there are going to be consequences.” He confirmed that multiple arrests were made following recent protests.
Ferguson also spoke to the unrest in Spokane Wednesday night saying, “My understanding is multiple arrests were made. If someone’s breaking the law, that’s appropriate. And that needs to happen. So, you we’re in. I’m in directly in regular conversation (with Mayor Lisa Brown). Like I said, with the mayor to make sure we’re updated. As I understand, things are calm there now. And so, I appreciate her work and she has difficult decisions to make but appreciate that things are calm now and that nobody was seriously hurt.”
Ferguson highlighted his apprehension about President Trump’s actions in California, which he fears could be repeated in Washington. He noted that a significant hearing was scheduled in the Northern District of California regarding the federal government’s authority to federalize the National Guard without state approval. “We believe the law is clear,” Ferguson stated, emphasizing the importance of the governor’s approval.
The governor assured the public that he is in continuous communication with local law enforcement and elected officials. He emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, stating, “The right to protest is fundamental. Any conduct that violates the law or is violent only plays into Donald Trump’s hands.”
Ferguson canceled his weekend plans to monitor developments closely, ensuring that state efforts are coordinated and prepared for any federal actions. He plans to hold a press conference to discuss these issues further.
