Gonzaga students express concern over lack of shooting notification

SPOKANE, Wash. – A shooting occurred just after 7:00 p.m. near East Cento Avenue and North Cincinnati Street, only a short walk from Gonzaga University. The area is popular with students living off campus, and some students expressed concern about not being notified of the crime.

Spokane police have not yet identified a suspect or determined a motive for the shooting that resulted in one person’s death.

Kevin Nguyen, a Gonzaga student living on the street where the shooting occurred, said, “It keeps me on my toes.”

Nguyen was returning from dinner when he saw police collecting evidence. The shooting took place on Friday night, and the suspect remains at large. The Spokane Police Department confirmed that the victim died on Saturday morning.

Another student, Aiden Noland, said, “In terms of just my day-to-day life I never really feel threatened.”

He noted the absence of a Zag Alert, saying, “This is honestly the first I’m hearing about it.”

Noland expressed concern at not being informed sooner, despite the crime occurring less than half a mile from campus.

“I definitely think we should have been notified,” Noland said.

He relies on Gonzaga University’s alerts to stay informed about local crime, adding, “They’re just referred to as like all GU emails and so it just goes out to like all students all faculty.”

Gonzaga University responded to inquiries about the lack of notification by stating there was no ongoing threat to the community.

“We have nothing further to add,” a Gonzaga spokesperson said.

The investigation by Spokane Police is ongoing.
