SPOKANE, Wash. — Gas prices across the Inland Northwest surged this week as violence in the Middle East disrupted global oil markets.
Gas in Spokane climbed above $4 per gallon today, up 17 cents from last week. Coeur d’Alene prices jumped 22 cents per gallon.
The national average increased 27 cents in the past week — the fastest weekly increase in 20 years, according to AAA. Analysts warn prices will continue climbing.
“Unfortunately, you’re probably going to be adding another $0.10 to $0.20 per gallon on to that in the coming days,” said petroleum analyst Matt McClain.
The surge stems from disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of global oil trade. The Middle East conflict has stalled shipping, creating market volatility.
Spokane driver Piero Sousa said he now pays $75-80 to fill his tank compared to $60 previously. Washington has the second-highest gas prices nationally, prompting customers to drive to Idaho for cheaper fuel.
Even Idaho has seen increases of almost 30 cents per gallon compared to last month. Analysts expect continued volatility until Middle East stability returns.
