Gas prices near record highs in Spokane amid Iran conflict

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gas prices in Spokane are nearing record highs nearly two months after the war with Iran began. U.S. gas prices have shot up more than 35 percent nationally since then.

A few gas stations were charging $5.29 per gallon for regular gas. This is one cent below the region’s record set in the summer of 2022, according to AAA. Drivers are not happy with this milestone.

Fred Brown filled up at Town’s Conoco on Indiana and Ash, where a gallon of regular gas is still below average for Spokane County at $4.95.

“It took $100 to fill my tank. That’s ridiculous,” Brown said.

Two months ago, AAA says the county’s average was $4.29. Petroleum analysts reported many states saw gas prices increase due to the conflict in Iran.

Jim Ahins just arrived in Spokane and noticed the price difference immediately.

“The shock is quite a bit,” Ahins said. “When I came up from Arizona, it was cheaper all along the way.”

Brown believes the high prices stem from more than just the international conflict.

“The prices here are just ridiculous. It’s taxes, and it’s our legislation. It has nothing to do with the poor guy that owns the gas station here,” Brown said.

Town’s Conoco ownership watches daily market predictions for gasoline and uses that to determine their price. They say recent shipments have been more expensive than their selling price, but owners want to remain loyal to their customer base and keep prices low.

The rising costs may drive some customers to head east to Idaho to fill up.

“All my friends are moving out of town into Idaho, and I’m considering it. And I’ve lived here since 1947,” Brown said. “I have saved money all my life. That’s the only reason I can stay here.”

Town’s Conoco is encouraging customers to sign up for their kickback rewards program. The location is offering a 5-cent discount per gallon through the summer.
